Introduction Letter - Questionnaire for BC MLA Candidates

Dear MLA candidate,

 

Congratulations on your candidacy in the upcoming election of MLAs in British Columbia. Please allow me to introduce SmartVoteBC2024.

 

SmartVoteBC2024 is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization, whose aim is to assist British Columbians to become aware of the risks and benefits of legislation as it pertains to their constitutional rights and freedoms, property, families, and persons. We support the idea that all public officeholders are both servants of the public and stewards of public resources and, in that role, they should govern themselves by the widely accepted Nolan Principles of Public Life.

 

SmartVoteBC2024 is organizing election-readiness Town Halls across the province beginning in September. These Town Halls are recorded and also live-streamed to help voters get ready for the Oct 19 election.

 

To give voters a clearer picture of where you stand on important issues, we have created a Questionnaire for Candidates, which is attached. This questionnaire is being distributed to all parties and independents and will help us to create political scorecards. These scorecards will be influenced by the response to this questionnaire, past voting history of MLAs, and verified public statements. Your scorecard can be viewed by the public at www.politicalscorecards.ca .

 

We also ask that you consider signing the attached Politician’s Pledge. This will also play a part in the scorecard evaluations.

 

With the Questionnaire and the Pledge, incumbent MLA candidates will have the opportunity to change their historically based scorecards, while new candidates can have their voices heard for the first time. This is an opportunity for you to get your viewpoints in front of British Columbian voters and tell them how you envision addressing the critical issues we are facing in our province.

 

If you believe that elected representatives should lead with integrity and govern with transparency and accountability, then please complete the Questionnaire and sign the Pledge to allow BC voters the opportunity to know what you think. SmartVoteBC2024 will strive to get your message out to constituents in your riding.

12. Should the provincial government have the authority to override Official Community Plans by issuing building permits?
13. Should building permits for high-rise housing be determined by proximity to transit hubs (e.g. train stations, rapid transit stations, bus stops) without concern for the requirements of car owners or city development plans?
14. Are you aware that individual property rights have been replaced by indigenous peoples’ ownership for all BC land and associated resources (e.g. oil, gas, minerals, lumber) under DRIPA?
15. Are you aware that DRIPA originated as UNDRIP, an initiative of the United Nations, not Canada, and that BC is the only province to have passed this initiative into law?
16. Does DRIPA address reconciliation appropriately, either partially or in full?
17. Should DRIPA be repealed?
18. Was it justified for the Federal government to declare a national emergency and make use of law enforcement officers to assist in disbanding the Truckers Convoy Protest in Ottawa in Feb 2022?
19. Do you believe every citizen has the right to choose what they put into their bodies without fear of persecution or penalty?
20. During a declared Public Health Emergency, should the provincial government have the authority to mandate vaccination?
21. Are you in favour of Federal Bill C-293, now before the senate, that will seriously change and impact the lives of every British Columbian?

25. Do you support the current policy that promotes books illustrating graphic sex to be made available in schools and libraries, so that children can readily access information about gender or sexual intercourse?

27. Has the provision of free narcotics reduced the number of drug addicts in British Columbia?
28. Has the Safe Supply programme contributed to an increase in drug overdoses in the province?
29. Are drug addicts selling the hydromorphone (Dilaudid) or morphine tablets that they acquire from free prescriptions in order to buy more potent drugs, like Fentanyl?
30. Does enabling the use of street narcotics by patients in hospitals create a safety issue for nurses and other patients?
31. Are you in favour of the supplying free drugs to addicts in the Safe Supply programme?
